on offense and finishing the debate on offense. >> bill: remember, though, because i've debated barak obama twice, i mean, he's not jimmy carter. reagan was the template who destroyed carter. but obama is much quicker than jimmy carter was. now, i don't think mitt romney is a confrontational man, am i correct on that assessment? he's not me. he's not looking for the fight. he doesn't relish the debate. >> that's what happened the first probably 15 primary debates. he stayed out of the fray and just sort of gave his mental. that's right. and let everybody else beat each other up. >> bill: but this time he has to prove himself to the american people which president obama doesn't have to prove himself. he's a known quantity. you like him, you don't. it's the people in the middle you're after. mitt romney still has to prove himself. so the burden in the debate is on the governor or am i wrong? >> no, i think you're absolutely right. while the challenger gets elevated by being on the stage with the president, clearly the president, he's on the mountain top. he's the victor, he won the last set o

" article talking about the debates in which you quote "republican strategists fretting over obama's recent rise, said the debates could be the last best chance for romney to deliver a decisive blow, change the narrative and steady his campaign." that's quite a tall order, david. sounds like a level of desperation there and desperation then leads to mistakes as we've seen in the past. is that a worry at all for the romney camp? i've heard some analysts say that he needs a hail mary. i mean, is it that dramatic? >> absolutely. the romney camp won't come out and say that. everybody sort of tries to downplay expectations before these things. all eyes are on romney. he's trailing in the polls nationally and in the swing states. he said to his supporters, hey, you know, when i name a running mate and when i'm at my convention you're going to see the bumps. you haven't seen sustained bumps. this is his chance to do it. he's running out of chances. 60 member people could watch these debates. this is a big chance for him. >> the challenger gets a butch just for sharing a stage with the president in

big presidential debate. the showdown in denver between president obama and republican challenger mitt romney. you know romney is looking for a new look and, of course, the president is trying to avoid the incumbent trap of trying to appear arrogant or underprepared. a lot on the line right now. >> a big moment in the campaign because there are so many eyes on this. it's the first of three debates between these two men. it's scheduled to last 90 minutes, and with just 33 days until the election some 60 million people are expected to tune in. former republican candidate rick santorum knows what it's like to go against mitt romney in a debate. we'll talk to him straight ahead, as well as the president's deputy campaign manager stephanie cutter. >>> also ahead, we brought you his incredible story last week, a man looking for a second chance to fulfill his dream after he suffered a debilitating injury in his one and only at-bat in the major leagues. last night, seven years later, adam greenberg finally got that chance. we'll show you how he did and talk to him about the big moment the morn

presidential debate. the stage is set for tonight's showdown between president obama and mitt romney. their first face-to-face meeting in five years. chuck todd is the white house political director and chief white house correspondent outside the university of denver. chuck, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. first of three 90-minute debates, one-on-one between president obama and mitt romney, and it comes at a critical time. for romney it's about turning the page on a rough september, and for the president it's a chance to shut off romney's last path to victory. president obama took a break from tuesday's debate prep in nevada visiting the hoover dam. >> it's spectacular, and i've never seen it before. >> reporter: meanwhile in denver, mitt romney's break time from debate prep was lunch at the tex-mex chain restaurant chipotle joined by ohio senator rob portman who is playing mr. obama in romney's mock debate sessions. with the two candidates off the trail tuesday, their number two men picked up the slack. campaigning in north carolina vice president biden dre

is the lord when i lay my vengeance upon thee. that should be obama's slogan for the first debates. >> they don't know the second hour of nhp is a drinking game. >> congresswoman, i'm almost sad i put you at this table. >> really, i'm not ready to pop open the champagne cork for president obama, because, you know, the republicans have what i call scissergy where the sun, the moon, and the stars have all lined up in their benefit to change the game here. number one, they have citizens united where they can spend unlimited, unaccountable amounts of money. if you give me $20 donation, you got to give your name, age, social security number and where you work. these folks, they give millions without disclosing who they are. they have voter suppression tactics. clearly, in all of the battleground tactics they had a coordinated strategy to do that and when they picked paul ryan, i thought, cynically, why would they just hand democrats that gift, a guy who has a record of wanting to take away social security. i have been on the budget committee for five of the seven years i have been in co

's performance? is that news story over? >> the debates will have the big impact some are predicting. there's post-debate, you know, euphoria for romney supporters and probably a little bit too much concern for obama supporters. the reality is those numbers help obama tremendously. at the same time, obama has the opportunity now to come back and do what he did the very next day. i think that was a key day for him. >> if he had that sort of debate performance and then we'd gotten job numbers that had us stuck at 8.2, then you start talking about a crisis at that point for the campaign. >> we have a chance to make it a much bigger story, precisely because the republicans have been so nice to us and delivered, for example, jack welch. the numbers were entirely fixed. he's been chimed in this morning by steve forbes, also said these have been fixed numbers. they intended for them to go down precisely under 8% before the election started. this is some crazy stuff going on on the right here. that might generate enough interest to make the debate -- >> i just want to -- just in case anyone has bee

take on the debate. on the one hand there was a sense of a desire to see more fire from president obama on that day but the fact that the language on thursday was we're going to be so far, you know, gone that we'll call the president a lazy delivery. pizza delivery guy, the black president, a lazy pizza delivery guy. this is important when we talk about george will's piece. how many american presidents have we called lazy? george bush took more vacations, i think than any president in modern times. nobody called him lazy. and that's such a stereotype for black people, my hackles went way up. >> my colleague andrea mitchell was like, maybe you'd like to take that back. maybe you didn't realize what you just said. >> one of the things that really frustrated me about this debate is that the president did not talk about the incredible portfolio of economic successes he has had. we refuse to mention any of them, forgetting about the jobs numbers for now. there's been an auto industry that saved, that has men a million more jobs. we've seen auto sales go up virtually every month he's been in
